The SER Alzira de Aleluia English course aims to provide professional style language teaching that develops the key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as a fun extra-curricular activity. We provide English classes for all ages and abilities free of charge to members of the community of Vidigal. Given that the community has high levels of poverty, English courses are way beyond the financial means of many; therefore we provide the key for residents to improve future prospects and opportunities. Given that Rio de Janeiro will host both the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016, the number of tourists visiting the city will increase dramatically, and therefore so will the opportunities for employment for people who speak English, thus English language learning has never been more important.
We are looking for volunteers to assist giving English lessons at the centre. Volunteers must be:
At least 18 years old
Enthusiastic, friendly and reliable
Hard working and flexible – working with an NGO can be frustrating at times and development can be slow but it is always worth it!
Reliable and good at time keeping
Able commit to giving lessons twice a week for a minimum of 3 monthsThe NGO uses two basic grammar workbooks (with Portuguese translation) and has a range of materials available to volunteers. Whilst the course follows a syllabus, volunteers will be free to plan their own lessons and teach in their own style.
A basic knowledge of Portuguese and TEFL experience is preferred. We offer Portuguese classes with native Brazilian speakers (at an extra cost) if you wish to learn Portuguese / brush up on your Portuguese skills.
As we rely entirely on donations, we charge a ONE-OFF $300 (USD) FEE for our volunteer program to help towards the day to day running of the NGO.
Benefits of volunteering with us:
Avoid paying ridiculous fees to Volunteer Tourism companies
Volunteers are picked up and dropped off at the end of each day and a traditional Brazilian lunch is provided
Upon being accepted onto the program, volunteers will receive an orientation pack containing information about the NGO, advice on teaching English as a foreign language, and tourist information about Rio de Janeiro
We are a small, family run organization so volunteers feel valued and have the opportunity to really make a difference
Volunteering as an English teacher with SER Alzira de Aleluia is a life changing experience against a stunning backdrop of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
